It’s fascinating to learn that discarded materials such as plastic bottles destined for landfills can be recycled and repurposed into new items like backpacks. In fact, Targus has been turning bottles into bags since 2009. Its new Cypress EcoSmart Collection, certified by Global Recycled Standard (GRS), is a new collection of notebook bags that are made from recycled materials including plastic bottles.
The latest collection is Targus’ third collection under its EcoSmart line which has sold over half a million units. The Cypress collection improves on its previous award-winning designs by incorporating more recycled materials into the bags. That’s not all, materials are tracked through the GRS programme.
Plastic bottles are used to make everything from the bag lining to the body and trim, without compromising on features, security and ergonomic comfort synonymous with Targus.
“Sustainability is complicated. There are a lot of companies making claims – but they can’t back it up. For us, it’s really important that we do it in the right way,” says Joanne Sessler, vice president of global design and innovation, Targus. “By being GRS Certified, we are able to trace the yarn fiber back to the recycling system it came from as well as the people who were making the yarn. So, we know the entire process of the material’s production and know that it is being made as sustainably as possible.”
Previous collections include Balance EcoSmart of which its 15.6-inch Checkpoint-Friendly BackPack was named a Green Good Design 2018 Awards Honoree in the Green Product/Graphic Design category. The award was conferred by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre in the area of Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The Spruce Collection which is an antecedent of Balance EcoSmart, remains one of the top selling backpacks to date.
The new Cypress EcoSmart Collection encompasses 11 products including backpacks, sleeves, and slipcase. The products include padded and ergonomic shoulder straps; water bottle holders; and trolley straps for rolling luggage, for customer comfort and convenience.
Targus also recently partnered with Lenovo to introduce the Lenovo Eco Pro Backpack.
