Create and share 3D images with Snapchat’s new 3D Camera

Snapchat 3D Camera Mode

Snap Inc. is making its much-loved camera even better. Today, a new 3D Camera Mode debuts in Snapchat—allowing you to create Snaps that change in perspective and appearance based on how you move your phone when you view them. Yes, parallax and beyond.

Starting today, Snapchatters with iPhone X and above (sorry Android, for now) will be able to create and share Snaps with 3D and swipe on new 3D Effects, Lenses and Filters.

While Android and pre-iPhone X devices won’t be able to create these funky new 3D Snaps, they will be able to receive and interact with them. Simply give the phone a wiggle and these Snaps will jump into life.

The 3D Camera Mode is made possible by combining image and depth information from the iPhone X (and above) cameras. The camera reconstructs a 3D model that looks and feels like a miniature diorama.

In Preview, you’ll be able to rotate and wiggle your phone to bring the Snap to life.

Time needed: 2 minutes

Here’s how to do it step-by-step:

  1. Step 1

    Update the Snapchat app

  2. Step 2

    Open the Snapchat camera

  3. Step 3

Select the dropdown menu on the right

  4. Step 4

Select “3D” and take a selfie

  5. Step 5

From there, swipe to add 3D Lenses and Filters for another layer of interactivity

  6. Step 6

Share to your Stories, Chat, or even save to your Camera Roll to share elsewhere.

Currently, around 203 million people use Snapchat daily, and more than 70 percent of Daily Active Users play with or view Lenses every day.
