Local grocers thrive on Lazada during MCO 2.0; daily sales up 170%

Lazada Stay Home

If you’ve fired up your Lazada app recently, you may have noticed a new “Stay Home” icon. Yes, it’s been specially tailored to encourage Malaysians to stay home and at the same time is a hub where you can find curated daily essentials and fresh/frozen groceries, amongst other things.

Since the introduction of the “Keep Calm and Shop from Home” on Lazada Malaysia, thousands of grocery stores have flocked to the site since last year. With second wave of the Movement Control Order (MCO), local grocers have become online business veterans while Malaysians have become accustomed to buying daily essentials and food online. According to Sherry Tan, chief business officer of Lazada Malaysia, the grocery category’s daily average sales has increased over 170 per cent year-on-year across 2020.

Cameron Farmers said they were able to leverage on Lazada’s strong consumer base to MCO-proof its business online and retain the livelihood of its farmers. From its humble foray into e-commerce last year, it has expanded its offerings to eggs, garden-plucked fruits, in addition to its renowned freshly-harvested vegetables.

During the start of MCO last year, Cameron Farmers had to discard tonnes of vegetables due to disruption in the supply chain. Since onboarding Lazada, it has grown a loyal store following of nearly 30,000 with an average sales of 10,000kg of fresh produce each month.

Another vendor, Fully Fishery, leverages its strength in livestreaming sales through Lazada’s in-app LazLive feature. The business promises seamless 24-hour and 48-hour deliveries to Malaysian households. It offers a wide selection of freshly-caught seafood including salmon, tilapia, scallop, crayfish, cod, king crab, and more. It sells up to 3,000kg of seafood each month.

Local grocer D Mart switched business model and started selling online during the first MCO. Founder Dylan Lee said he was guided by Lazada University’s comprehensive training and Lazada’s intuitive e-commerce tools. D Mart has recorded staggering sales of more than 8,000kg of fresh vegetables in a span of a month with nearly 100 per cent positive store rating from satisfied customers. It offers frozen seafood, fresh fruit, seal-packed poultry, and more.

Lazada’s specially-curated space offers over 10,000 essential items—ranging from farm-to-table vegetables, fruits, meat, seafood, and cooking ingredients, to daily necessities such as face masks, hand sanitisers, toiletries, pet supplies, and more.

The section also offers daily Free Shipping vouchers and discounts of up to 50 per cent. That aside, select fresh product and chilled food merchants provide same-day and 48-hour deliveries for MCO 2.0.
