If I were to pinpoint two things Huawei has done right in recent years it would have to be: Leica and Twilight. Its partnership with Leica didn’t just propel the company up brand affinity ranks but also help it produce some of the world’s best smartphone cameras. The triple camera on the Huawei P20 Pro is ground-breaking and the great thing is, that’s not the only thing remarkable about the device. There’s also the jaw-dropping Twilight colourway – a colour gradient that blends from purple to blue to green under different lighting environments.
Twilight has been, without a doubt, the most popular colour variant and it has spawned plenty of rip-offs in the market. I must admit, it’s my favourite colour in the line-up, too.
Now that the dust has settled, Huawei is introducing another colourway. If shifting colours aren’t your thing, you may want to settle for this – Pearl White.
Huawei says the new colour is nature-inspired and while it’s fundamentally white, its unique surface qualities produce different colours when viewed at different angles and lighting conditions.
The company quotes nacre, also known as mother of pearl, which is “an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer and outer coating of pearls.”
Nacre is iridescent, with light reflected from the outer surface able to interfere with light from the inner surface.
Aside from Pearl White and Twilight, the P20 Pro also comes in Pink Gold, Midnight Blue and Graphic Black.
To refresh your memory, the sleek P20 Pro comes in a glass and metal body, certified IP67 dust- and water-resistant.
It rocks a 6.1-inch FHD+ (2240×1080) OLED display with an 18.7:9 screen aspect ratio with a tiny notch on the top.
Under the hood, the P20 Pro uses a 10nm octa-core Kirin 970 chipset with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
It makes do without microSD expansion and a headphone jack.
The device packs a large 4,000mAh battery that fast charges via USB Type-C.
The top-dog triple camera needs little introduction. It has a main 40MP f/1.8 RGB sensor coupled with an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto and 20MP f/1.6 monochrome sensor. It has an impressively large 1/1.78-inch main sensor that captures much more light than competitors.
Low-light performance is the best in the business and its 3X optical zoom up to 10X Digital Zoom performance is impressive.
