We’ve been taking quite a bit of beautiful selfies in the office for the past week, thanks to the all-new ‘Selfie Expert,’ – the OPPO F1 Plus. Also known as the OPPO R9 in certain markets, the F1 Plus is now officially available in Malaysia.
The F1 Plus may share the ‘selfie expert’ title with its smaller sibling, the F1, but I can assure you, it’s a completely different beast.
Out of the box, it looks fantastic, sporting a sleek metal unibody with chamfered edges overall rounded finish. You’re going to say it looks familiar, and well, it does look like a certain ‘i’ device, and also to some extent the HTC A9. Which… isn’t a bad thing at all.
It’s feels great in the hands and overall very well built. I’m also surprised how light it is, tipping the scales at 145g.
On the front, it packs a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED display, a step up from the 720p HD display on the F1.
The F1 Plus also gets a front-mounted fingerprint sensor built into the home button. Now this could be the fastest fingerprint scanner I’ve experienced this far. It takes just 0.2 seconds to scan and unlock the phone. Fantastically fast.
Powering the selfie-centric device is the MediaTek Helio P10 octa-core processor, MediaTek’s second most powerful chip in its portfolio. It gets a generous 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage. You have the option to expand further via microSD.
Keeping it juiced is a 2,850mAh battery. Not the biggest by any standard, but commendable for a device so slim (6.6mm). It does feature the famed VOOC flash charge, so you can be charged up in little time.
Disappointingly, the F1 Plus only comes with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and not Android M. As a consolation, it does run the latest colorOS 3.0 – which is faster and more efficient than its predecessor.
Any time is selfie time
Now that we’ve gotten the other specs out of the way, here comes the main highlight. The 16MP f/2.0 front-facing selfie camera. This is the biggest camera I’ve seen on a front camera so far. Based on first impressions, it’s super snappy, with fast focus and shutter.
Beauty 4.0 mode makes you naturally beautiful, or un-naturally beautiful depending how you look at it. There’s plenty of software wizardry to help you take better photos, including Selfie Panorama, Palm Shutter, Screen Flash and other filters.
It’s a feature current ambassador Nora Danish absolutely approves.
On the back, strangely, the main shooter is rated lower – 13MP f/2.2 with PDAF and LED flash.
