unifi Basic: Everything you need to know about the new entry-level 30Mbps plan

TM unifi Basic

Last week, Telekom Malaysia (TM) revealed new unifi plans including its most accessible plan yet. The all-new entry-level unifi Basic plan breaks new ground in terms of price point and affordability.

TM has released details of the plan on the just-live new unifi Basic page. Let’s drill down on the nitty-gritty.

In a nutshell, it’s a super affordable plan that will give you a 30Mbps connection at just MYR79 per month. For the first time, TM is introducing a data quota to its plan but given the price point, this isn’t too surprising.

Users get 60GB of monthly quota which is refreshed in the next bill cycle.

Contrary to what was initially believed, the unifi Basic plan isn’t a broadband-only plan. TM is also giving subscribers access to 17 free-to-air channels on unifi TV via its playTV@unifi mobile app. The app is available for both iOS and Android and is downloadable for free. For a limited time, TM is giving users 30 days of free viewing of all unifi TV channels.

Here’s the list of free channels:

  1. TV1
  2. TV2
  3. TV3
  4. CJ Wow Shop
  5. NTV7
  6. 8TV
  7. TV9
  8. Salam HD
  9. TV AlHijrah HD
  10. LAKU Mall HD
  11. TV HD
  12. Channel NewsAsia
  13. Bloomberg TV
  14. Parlimen Malaysia
  15. Channel W
  16. NHK WORLD-JAPAN
  17. Outdoor Channel HD

As there’s a bundled fixed line with the plan, there are charges of MYR0.20 per minute for calls. However, a telephone set isn’t bundled with the plan, so if you wish to make calls, you’ll need to purchase a set from the nearest TM point or any telecommunications store.

But wait, is this plan really for everyone? Actually no. This entry-level plan is targeted at B40 households, which TM defines as household income of MYR4,500 and below.

Here are some basic requirements

  • Applicant must be a Malaysian citizen above 18 years old.
  • Total household income must be MYR4,500 and below.

Note that household income is the combined income of all individuals sharing a place of residence.

For verification purposes, you’ll need to present your IC, a recent salary slip (if employed); or supporting documents verified by local authorities (if self-employed) e.g. District Officer, Pegawai Kerajaan Kumpulan A, registered Persatuan Penduduk; or BR1M acceptance letter.

Some basic questions answered

Is there a contract? Yes, the unifi Basic plan is based on a contract period of 24 months. Customers will be charged a penalty fee of the remaining months’ package fee if there’s any early termination.

What if I use up my 60GB quota? Data is refreshed in the next billing cycle. Speeds will be throttled to 128Kbps. There are no add-on quota options at this point in time, but if you require more monthly quota, it is recommended that you upgrade to unifi Lite (MRY129) or unifi Advance plan (MYR139).
