For the past couple of years, OPPO has been laser-focused on selfies. It’s entire fleet – OPPO F1, OPPO F1 Plus and latest OPPO F1s are all selfie-centric monsters. Its upcoming OPPO R9s, however, is going to take an about-turn. OPPO’s saying “take a break from selfies” in its communication on social channels.
The OPPO R9s and OPPO R9s Plus were announced a couple of months back in China. To be fair, they’re still strong selfie-wise, but instead of a weaker rear camera, the OPPO R9s comes with an identical 16MP unit. On the front is a 16MP camera with f/2.0 and Beautify 4.0 software.
It’s no surprise that it’s a Sony-sourced f/1.7 IMX398 camera on the rear, sporting dual-focus technology that OPPO claims is 40% faster than PDAF. As an additional plus point, it comes with electronic stabilization (EIS). On the other hand the R9 Plus boasts optical image stabilization (let’s hope OPPO brings this to Malaysia at a later date).
Looks-wise, the OPPO R9s retains the familiar OPPO F1-series lines and curvy all-metal build. It gets a 5.5-inch Full HD display with Gorilla Glass 5.
OPPO continues to use the service of the 600-series Snapdragon chip – this time the Snapdragon 625, coupled with a generous 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage.
It gets a fingerprinter scanner built into the home button, and a dual-SIM hybrid SIM tray.
Surprisingly, there’s VOOC Flash Charge support and a large built-in 3,010mAh battery.
The OPPO R9s will run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, with ColorOS 3.0 on top.
Pricing and availability
OPPO has been teasing the OPPO R9s on its Facebook page but what’s not clear is a specific launch date. Expect it to be priced below MYR2,000 when it gets here, though.
