Xiaomi’s second-generation Android One devices – the Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite are hitting Malaysian shores sooner than you think. Launched less than a week ago in Madrid, the pure stock Android, camera-focused duo will go on sale as early as 3 August (Mi A2).
As a quick refresher, the Mi A2 builds upon the success of the Mi A1, Xiaomi’s first ever Android One smartphone. The Mi A2 shares its underpinnings with the Mi 6X, a similar strategy Xiaomi employed with the Mi A1 and the Mi 5X.
The device gains the services of the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660AIE chip mated to up to 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 128GB of storage.
You’ll appreciate the Mi A2’s new slim, lithe figure – a unibody design made in aluminium and measuring just 7.3mm thick. It’s offered in three colours: Black, Gold and Blue.
In the camera stakes, the Mi A2 impresses. The phone boasts a 12MP (Sony IMX486) + 20MP (Sony IMX376) dual-camera system with fast f/1.75 lenses, coupled with a large 1.25-micron pizel size. The sensor supports pixel binning – a technical process that combines four pixels into a large superpixel to capture more light.
The selfie camera is no less impressive – a 20MP whopper also with pixel binning and AI beautification.
The front features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ 18:9 display protected by Gorilla Glass, while underneath it gets a 3,010mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0. It charges via USB Type-C.
Note that there’s no headphone jack.
The Mi A2 Lite, meanwhile, is a budget phone based on the Redmi 6 Pro. It comes with a 5.84-inch Full HD+ display with a notch.
Under the hood, it gets the venerable Snapdragon 625 processor coupled with up to 4GB of storage and 64GB of storage.
In the camera department, it is equipped with a 12MP + 5MP dual-camera system with a run-of-the-mill 5MP selfie shooter with AI Portrait Mode.
It packs a big 4,000mAh battery that charges up via micro-USB.
The phone comes in Black, Gold and Blue.

Pricing and availability
The Mi A2 is offered in two configurations:
- 4GB RAM +64GB storage – MYR999
- 6GB RAM + 128GB – MYR1,199
The device will go on sale on 3 August at the Mi Store in KLCC, and at Lazada and other authorised retailers starting 4 August 2018.
The Mi A2 Lite will come in one configuration: 3GB + 32GB of storage and is priced at MYR699. It will go on sale starting 18 August 2018.
