Maxis has launched its eKelas portal, just several months from introducing its eKelas digital learning initiative targeted at rural and urban poor communities. The launch event attracted more than 700 attendees which included eKelas students and parents.
eKelas by Maxis is an after-school digital learning initiative that aims to improve the academic performance of students in rural communities.
Subjects of focus include Science, Mathematics and English for Form 1, 2 and 3 students.
eKelas uses a combination of live tutorials, group learning and interactive digital content. Importantly, these are in line with the Malaysian School Syllabus.
The program is delivered through Pusat Internet 1Malaysia (PI1Ms) Community Broadband Centres, that serve as digital hubs for communities in the underserved areas.
Maxis currently has 20 PI1Ms under its care across the country. More than 2,400 sutdents are already participating in live tutorials delivered through these PI1Ms.
Classes are held from 3-6PM on Fridays, and 10AM-6PM on Saturdays, with each class spanning an hour.
With the newly launch eKelas portal, students will have access to cloud-based resources and learning content, enabling them to study on demand and at their own pace.
Some of the key features of the eKelas portal include:
- Personalised learning journey – Students can customise the look and feel of their learning journey. They can opt for content that is of interest to them.
- Community interaction – Through the portal, students and teachers can interact via discussion forums, as well as easily share content through sharing buttons.
- Recognising achievement – A leaderboard keeps track of points scored by students, which also spur motivation and give students a sense of achievement.
Adding to that, Raja Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Arshad Raja Tun Uda, Maxis’ Chairman said, “We will be rewarding students who have shown the most progress in their academic results through our new Students’ Grant program.”
Maxis plans to expand eKelas in phases, to an additional 25 locations, for a total of 45 PI1Ms nationwide. These PI1Ms are expected to impact at least 10,000 students by 2018.
