This may be a petrolhead’s dream come true. If you’re a car enthusiast who happens to also love LEGO, then this is indeed awesome news. LEGO has approved production for the Caterham Super Seven model, a result of its LEGO Ideas program.
The idea platform
First a little background about LEGO Ideas. Think of it as a ‘Kickstarter’ platform funded by LEGO. Have an awesome idea for a LEGO model? Create one yourself, snap great photos, submit a kick-ass project description then submit it in.
Once that’s done, gather support – tell everyone you know – friends, family, fans, social media (yes, you’ll need to pimp it).
When you hit 10,000 supporters for your idea, the LEGO board will do a LEGO Review. The board evaluates your project according to published review criteria and guidelines then hand-picks projects to become actual production LEGO Ideas sets.
Caterham is go
For the Caterham project, creator Carl Greatrix (@bricktrix) submitted models in different trim. The level of detail is pretty impressive – including a removable bonnet, and detailed engine and cabin.
Note that this is a prototype, and the actual retail model may differ, subject to LEGO’s final input and design; as well as intended price point.
Nonetheless, check out more photos at Greatrix’s Flickr page.
I can’t wait for this to hit the shelves.
