ASUS Previews New ASUS Transformer Book T100, Powered by Intel Atom “Bay Trail”

Ahead of the official release tomorrow, ASUS today took the wraps off the ASUS Transformer Book T100 to members of the media today, the first 2-in-1 device to feature Intel’s latest “Bay Trail” SoC in Malaysia. The 10.1-inch device is also one of the first devices to feature Windows 8.1.

The new ASUS T100 features the quad-core Intel Atom Z3740 running at 1.33Ghz, and packed with 2GB RAM (and 2MB L2 cache) and in 32/64GB variants. The 10.1-inch IPS LCD is a HD display (1366x768pixels @ 155PPI).

The ASUS T100 supports dual-band WiFi 802.11b/g/n and also includes a microSD expansion, USB 3.0 slot.

With the detachable keyboard plugged in, it weighs just slightly over 1kg. Together with the keyboard, the ASUS T100 gives users up to 11 hours of battery life.

The ASUS T100 will be one of the first devices to run Windows 8.1 out of the box, the all-important Windows update from Microsoft. Microsoft will release the full consumer Windows 8.1 update globally tomorrow, 17 October 2013.

Intel’s “Bay Trail” series
The “Bay Trail” family of processors is based on Intel’s low power, high performance microarchitecture known as “Silvermont”, first announced in May 2013. Silvermont allows Intel to deliver multiple variants of the market for tablet, 2-in-1 devices, entry-level notebooks, desktops and all-in-one devices. A major advantage of Bay Trail is that it supports both Android and Windows platforms giving manufacturers flexibility.

The Bay Trail family is split into – Bay Trail-T or also know has the Intel Atom Processor Z3000 Series is the next generation 22nm quad-core SoC made for tablets and 2-in-1 devices like the ASUS T100.

The Bay Trail-M and Bay Trail-D lines on the other hand are also known as the Intel Pentium and Intel Celeron in different SKUs. The Bay Trail-M series is targeted at touch-enabled notebooks at lower price points.

The Bay Trail-D line is the smallest-ever package for desktop processors, paving way for smaller form factors for entry-level desktop computing and vertical computing such as intelligent digital displays.

Pricing and Availability
Priced to kill, the ASUS Transformer Book T100 (32GB version) will be available in local retail channels starting tomorrow for RM1,299. (SRP).
