Apple Watch Series 5 gets always-on display, built-in compass

As expected, Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 5 alongside the new iPhone 11 series on Tuesday. The world’s most popular smartwatch now gets an Always-On Retina display, built-in compass with new Compass app, better safety, and new cases and straps.

The new Always-On Retina display is certainly a welcome feature; now you won’t have to raise your arm or tap the display to see the time or other information.

The Apple Watch Series 5 uses a new LTPO display coupled with a low power display driver that can deliver a variable refresh rate of 60Hz down to 1Hz. Even with the new always-on display, the Series 5 retains the all-day, 18-hour battery life as its predecessor.

Apple is also introducing new watch faces and complications which take advantage of the new always-on display.

The Series 5 gets enhanced location features which include a built-in compass, updated Maps app and a current elevation feature. Complementing the built-in compass is a new Compass app. Apple said that developers can now take advantage of the built-in compass in their apps.

There are various handy safety features built into the Apple Watch, including a Noise app, Emergency SOS , and fall detection. It’s now even better. On every cellular model, the Apple Watch can automatically call for assistance in case of an emergency, in 150 countries around the world.

The Apple Watch Series 5 is proudly made with 100 percent recycled aluminium, but wait, there’s also a new case material—titanium. Available in two beautiful brushed finishes: natural titanium and space black titanium. Additionally, for those who prefer a clean look, there’s also a ceramic white case option.

The Apple Watch is offered in a 44mm and 40mm case and features an electric heart sensor and second generation optical heart sensor.

Apple didn’t reinvent the wheel here as the Series 5 looks to be an incremental update to the Series 4.

For the first time, you can enjoy a more personalised experience when purchasing Apple Watch Series 5 in Apple Stores, on apple.com and in the Apple Store app. The new Apple Watch Studio gives you the chance  to pick your preferred case and band combination to create a look that is uniquely your own.
