Apple has quietly introduced a new GPU upgrade option for its flagship 16-inch MacBook Pro. Previously offering just the AMD Radeon Pro 5300M/5500M with either 4GB or 8GB of GDDR6 memory, you can now custom configure your MacBook Pro with a Radeon Pro 5600M with 8GB of HBM2 memory.
The Radeon Pro 5600M comes with 40 compute units–that’s 2,560 stream processors delivering up to 5.3 TFlops of single-precision (FP32) performance. It will perform up to 75 per cent faster than the Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6.
Apple says it will also perform up to 3.5 times faster than the previous-generation 15-inch MacBook Pro (8-core with Radeon Pro 560X 4GB GDDR5).
HBM2 with 392GB/s bandwidth offers better performance/watt and better overall power consumption compared to GDDR6, although inherently a more expensive memory technology. AMD used HBM for its older Fury X GPUs although it moved to GDDR5/6 for its Turing cards and is expected to use GDDR6 for its new Navi GPUs.
The new Radeon Pro 5600M with 8GB HBM2 memory is a MYR2,800 option and can be custom-configured at the Apple Store online.
Apple’s portable powerhouse features up to the 9th Generation Intel Core i9-processor, 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 memory, 1TB SSD storage, 16-inch Retina display, Touch Bar, Touch ID, and four Thunderbolt ports, starting from MYR10,499. It comes in Space Gray and Silver options.
Meanwhile, Apple has also released an SSD kit for Mac Pro, allowing you to upgrade internal storage easily from the original factory configuration.
