On Valentine’s Day, Xiaomi introduced the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro in India, two impressive mid-range smartphones. After teasing us with the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus earlier, it looks like the China phone maker is set to bring the Redmi Note 5 to local shores.
Spotted on the SIRIM database, the Redmi Note 5, which bears the model number M1803E7SG, is listed together with Xiaomi’s Wireless Charger (MDY-09-EF). The wireless charger is a curious addition, since this was introduced in China recently, together with the new Mi MIX 2S. Does this mean the Mi MIX 2S is also coming soon?
So, back to the Redmi Note 5. If it’s any clue, the Indonesian launch is slated to happen in 10 days time, and we may be looking at a similar timeframe for the device.

It is unclear which variant of the Redmi Note 5 Malaysia will be receiving. Xiaomi tends to repackage and rename devices of similar specs for different markets.
In Malaysia for instance, the Redmi Note 5 (India’s version) was repackaged as the Redmi 5 Plus.
Back in its homeland, Xiaomi launched another Redmi Note 5 which is closer spec-ed to the higher end Redmi Note 5 Pro. Go figure.
If we can assume that the Redmi Note 5 is the same as its Indonesian cousin, then it would sport a 5.99-inch FHD+ 18:9 display, with a brand new design.
Under the hood is where it really rocks. It’s the first device to use Qualcomm’s power efficient 14nm Snapdragon 636 processor with Kryo 260 CPU cores. The chip is said to be almost 60 percent more powerful than the Redmi Note 4.
The device packs a whopping 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of storage.
It’s also the first Redmi device to get a dual-camera setup, this time a 12MP f/2.2 + 5MP f/2.0 combination, arranged in an iPhone X-esque array.
On the front, it packs a massive 20MP selfie camera with front-facing LED light.
It comes with a large 4,000mAh battery charges up via micro-USB.
It is expected to run MIUI 9 based on Android Oreo out-of-the-box.
In India, the similarly spec-ed Redmi Note 5 Pro retails for INR16,999/MYR1,025 for the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model. Can we expect a similar price point in Malaysia for the Redmi Note 5?
