Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Bigger, better, faster

Xiaomi Mi Max 3

Xiaomi continues to churn devices out like there’s no tomorrow. Following the Mi A2, Mi 8 and recently POCOPHONE F1 (it’s sub-brand), the Chinese tech is bringing yet another to Malaysian shores – the Mi Max 3. The brand also introduced its latest wearable – the Mi Band 3.

The Mi Max series has always been about one thing: BIG. It always had the biggest battery and display, and as all Xiaomi devices go, big on value.

The Mi Max 3 is no different. It’s simply bigger and better at everything its predecessor the Mi Max 2 was.

The Mi Max 3 sports a massive 6.9-inch 18:9 FHD+ display (2160×1080), boasting a screen-to-body ratio of 85.19 percent, about 6.5 percent higher than the Mi Max 2. Compared to its predecessor, it offers a larger screen without increasing overall body size.

Continuing the tradition of packing a massive battery, the Mi Max 3 does not disappoint with its 5,500mAh cell. It boasts a standby time of 474 hours and even double up as a powerbank with an upgraded output of 5V/1.2A. The enormous battery delivers up to 10 hours of non-stop gaming, 17 hours of video streaming and 233 hours of music playback. Impressive.

What’s also cool is that the battery supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 and parallel charging via USB Type-C. Parallel charging uses multiple charging streams to charge the battery simultaneously, which reduces excessive heat. The 9V/2A charger in the box can refuel the battery from 0 to 71 percent in just one hour. Xiaomi says it’s twice as efficient as the Mi Max 2.

Under the hood, the device rocks the powerful octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, mated to 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 64GB of storage. It also features microSD storage expansion.

In terms of optics, the Mi Max 3 uses a familiar 12MP + 5MP f/1.9 Dual Pixel AI dual-camera system with large 1.4-micron pixels. The front camera isn’t too shabby either, using an 8MP f/2.0 sensor with AI Beautify and a 4500K selfie light.

The dual-SIM device offers an IR blaster and rear fingerprint sensor, plus also supports AI Face Unlock.

It runs MIUI 9, based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Mi Max 3 pricing and availability

The Mi Max 3 retails for MYR1,099 and is available in Black. It will be sold at all Authorised Mi Stores, Lazada, Shopee starting from 27 September 2018.
