SST: No price hike for OnePlus 6

OnePlus 6

For the past two months, Malaysians have been enjoying zero-rated Goods and Services Tax (GST), especially in terms of electronics and tech gadgets. With the Sales and Service Tax (SST) coming into force on 1 September 2018, we’re already seeing some price hikes on certain items due to the tax.

Based on this guide by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, items like mobile phones and notebook PCs are subject to 5% SST, while other items like digital cameras, DSLRs, headphones and watches are slapped with 10%.

As you may know, SST is imposed on certain goods at the first level, and not at all levels of the supply chain like GST. Imported goods will see an impact and may see increased cost. Brands can choose to absorb this cost, or have it trickle down to the consumer. It’s really down to the discretion of the brand.

If you’re a OnePlus fan, you’ll be chuffed to know that Mi Han Sdn Bhd, the principle distributor of OnePlus in Malaysia has announced that there will not be any price hikes for OnePlus devices.

The company will absorb the 5% SST.

By the way, since the end of last month, Mi Han has been running an “over trade-in” program for the OnePlus 6. You can get an over trade-in value of up to MYR200 on your existing phone on top of the value of your phone, used to offset your OnePlus 6 purchase.

For instance, if your phone is currently valued at MYR800 and you’re looking to buy a OnePlus 6 6GB RAM + 64GB storage (Mirror Black) model, you’ll get an additional MYR100 over trade-in value.

In summary, it’s MYR2,399 – MYR800 (phone trade-in) – MYR100 (over trade-in) = MYR1,499 cash top up to own the OnePlus 6. To sweeten the deal even further, it will come with a 1-year additional warranty and you’ll have a chance to participate in the OnePlus Pay-as-you-wish charity programme to get OnePlus Bullets Earphones (V2) Black and a OnePlus Fast Charge USB Type-C Cable (100cm).

The over trade-in promotion runs until 5 September 2018.
