I don’t know about you, but I rate water-resistance highly when selecting a smartphone. Once you’ve gotten used to owning a dust- and water-resistant device, you tend to take for granted that everything else is just as durable.
Over the years, I’ve used and owned various water resistant devices (usually IP68 rated), from Sony Xperia Z series, HTC Butterfly 2 (still a long time favourite) and now the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.
Raindrops, splashes and running tap water? No problem. I’ve even brought the S7 edge swimming and captured underwater footage.
So, it’s great to see brands like Samsung, Apple and LG finally incorporating dust- and water-resistance capabilities into their products. As a consumer, it’s reassuring that when your Galaxy A Series or iPhone 7 or LG G6 meets unplanned events, it will come out unscathed.
But have you wondered how a brand tests its products for water resistance or durability though?
In these series of videos, Samsung show how much it takes quality seriously, and demonstrates how it tests its smartphones in the durability department.
For the Samsung Water Resistance Test, the Galaxy S7 edge is tested under simulated raindrops and splashes, then submerged under 1.5m of water for 30 minutes.
In the Samsung Durability Test, the Galaxy S7 edge undergoes a couple of pressure tests.
Note that testings are conducted in controlled lab conditions and environment. Real world results may defer depending on individual usage and environment.
