Continuing where the GALAXY S4 zoom left off, Samsung has just revealed a new iteration of the camera-specialised smartphone – the GALAXY K zoom. The new device couples real optics, a snazzy premium design with the connectivity of a GALAXY smartphone. What’s interesting is the powerful 20.7MP BSI CMOS sensor and the all-new Exynos 5 Hexa processor.

The camera is undeniably a focal part of smartphone ownership, looking at how the new generation has embraced wholly the concept of social sharing of photos. And for most part, the smartphone camera these days, despite the challenge of squeezing bigger sensors and what not into a smartphone chassis, has improved tremendously.

The GALAXY K zoom, along with the likes of the ground-breaking 41MP Lumia 1020, aims to push the boundaries of what smartphone optics can do.

Touting ‘real camera optics.’ the GALAXY K zoom is equipped with new retracting 24-240mm F3 1-6.3 lens provides 10x optical zoom. The 1/2.3 20.7MP BSI CMOS sensor offers ultra-clear, ultra-detailed images and the Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) should see it excel in low-light conditions. The camera also comes with a Xenon flash.

On the software side, the GALAXY K zoom integrates advanced camera usability features and functions, including AF/AE Separation (Auto Focus/Auto Exposure Separation), next-generation Pro Suggest mode and a Selfie Alarm.

The hybrid device runs Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box and includes handy features like Ultra Power Saving Mode for better battery life, S Health Lite and Studio app for photo and video editing purposes.

Design-wise, the GALAXY K zoom is compact, stylish, portable and features an ergonomic grip. Compared to the GALAXY S4 zoom, the GALAXY K zoom is certainly lighter and less bulkier.

The underlying hardware is pretty impressive, it comes powered by the new Exynos 5 Hexa, with two cores quad-cores running at 1.3Ghz and two cores running at 1.7Ghz. This should be the Exynos 5260 with a Mali T624 GPU, revealed at MWC 2014 earlier this year. The new platform should give the best balance of performance and low power consumption. The GALAXY K zoom is bundled with 2GB RAM.

The device supports both 3G/HSPA+ and LTE Cat4. The integrated touchscreen display is a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED (1280×720). It comes with all the bells and whistles a modern smartphone should have including WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, NFC and A-GPS + GLONASS.

Internal memory is disappointingly only 8GB, but it is expandable via microSD up to 64GB. The bundled battery is rated at 2,430mAh.

Pricing and availability will be revealed soon.
