As revealed by Lee Jui Siang, Samsung Malaysia Electronics Mobile and IT Business Unit VP, in New York, Samsung Malaysia has officially announced that pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in Malaysia will start on 11 April 2017. Prices for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are MYR3,299 and MYR3,699 respectively.
Three colour variants will be available, namely Midnight Black, Orchid Gray and Maple Gold. Samsung will likely introduce other colours further down the line as a sustenance strategy for the device, until the next flagship.
The global release date of the S8 flagship is slated for 21 April. For Malaysians, we’ll have to wait just a little longer – 5 May to be exact.
Pre-order special
Alongside the official pricing, Samsung also announced mouth-watering bundles as part of the pre-order promo. The bundle includes a Limited Edition Starter Kit (clear screen protector, clear cover, wireless stand and USB Type-C cable); a 5,100mAh Battery Pack and Samsung Protection Plus. The Samsung Protection Pack gives you 1-year screen crack warranty (a one-time replacement) and an additional 1-year warranty. The pre-order bundle is worth over MYR900.
Comparatively, the Malaysian bundle is different from the ones offered by telcos in the US though, as I covered here. For example, Verizon offers a free Gear VR with Controller and Oculus content pack. You can also opt for a USD99 Experience Box with Gear VR and Controller, Harman Kardon headphones, and a 256GB microSD card.
The absence of the new Gear VR with Controller might also mean it won’t be coming to Malaysia at the same time as the S8 flagships on 5 May.
How to pre-order
Pre-order starts from 10AM, 11 April till 11:59PM on 13 April. You’ll need to drop a MYR300 deposit via debit or credit card on Samsung’s Galaxy S8 pre-order page. Select your preferred colour and pick-up location of your device. As a pre-order customer, you’ll get your device a day earlier than the official launch – 4 May.
Telcos and participating retailers online and offline, have pre-order offers incoming too. Already, Maxis and Senheng have a register-for-interest page up-and-running.
As a refresher, the stunning new Galaxy S8 and S8+ boast the all-new Infinity Display. A bezel-less, edge-to-edge design that also marks the first time ever Samsung has done without a physical home button. The Galaxy S8 comes with a 5.8-inch QHD+ display. Those wanting more will love the 6.2-inch QHD+ display on the S8+.
Both share identical underpinnings. This includes the top-of-the-line 10nm 64-bit Exynos 8895 processor or Snapdragon 835 (region dependent). Memory-wise, both get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage. Storage expansion is made possible through microSD (up to 256GB) via its hybrid dual-SIM tray.
In the optics department, Samsung pretty much left everything intact from the S7/S7 edge. The excellent 12MP f/1.7 Dual Pixel camera is retained. On the front though, Samsung upgraded the selfie shooter a couple of notches to 8MP f/1.7.
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ pack 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh non-removable battery respectively. Both feature IP68 dust- and water-resistance, Adaptive Fast Charging over USB Type-C, as well as wireless charging.
