Realme 2 Pro: Power and style, made for today’s youth

Realme 2 Pro

The mid-range smartphone segment is a sweet spot for the mass consumer. Why? Because not everyone can afford a MYR5,000 phone or may want to fork out that much for a device. Especially when it comes to today’s youth, they’re an entirely different bunch. They want power, performance, style, and they want affordability. Most importantly, they want a brand that resonates with them. Thankfully, new player Realme has exactly what the young generation (and the young at heart, tsk tsk) needs – the Realme 2 Pro.

From the get go, the Realme 2 Pro aims to please. The design is sleek and feels good in the hand. In fact, it looks and feels much more expensive than it really is. Perhaps it’s not surprising, because Realme really used some engineering magic to create the transparent, crystal-like dewdrop back cover. Offered in Black Sea, Blue Ocean and Ice Lake tones, the stunning back cover is also highly durable. Also, there’s a fast fingerprint scanner mounted on the back.

Realme 2 ProOn the flip side, you’ll love the immersive 6.3-inch FHD dewdrop screen with a 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio. It boasts an incredible 90.8 percent screen-to-body ratio. This means you get much more screen squeezed into a smaller 5.5-inch equivalent body. The miniscule dew drop notch will make other notch displays seem completely aesthetically challenged.

While you may admire its outer beauty, don’t forget that the Realme Pro is quite a beast underneath too. In fact, the phone features the powerful, upper mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 660AIE processor. This AI-enabled chipset is coupled with up to a whopping 8GB of RAM and up to 128GB of onboard UFS2.1 storage. That’s more than plenty of storage for the tonnes of foodie pics, selfies, 4K videos you’ll be shooting, as well as games, apps and more.

One of the Realme 2 Pro’s killer features is its cameras. You may have seen some sample photos in my previous post, and if you haven’t, do check them out.

Realme 2 ProIt’s an impressive setup for a mid-range device, sporting a 16MP dual-camera system featuring a Sony IMX398 sensor with large 1.12-micron pixels. Realme didn’t hold back on the optics, and chose a superfast f/1.7 lens. This can only mean one thing – great low-light photography.

The rear camera also takes great portrait photos, enhanced with five Portrait Lighting effects.

Realme 2 ProOn the front, it’s equally impressive. The phone packs a 16MP selfie shooter with an f/2.0 aperture lens. It boasts AI beautification features that can identify 296 facial features and a mind-blowing 8 million personalised beautification solutions.

The beauty of the front camera is also the ability to beautify group photos. So, it’s not just that one person who always get beautified in those group pics!

The dual-SIM, dual-4G and dual-VoLTE phone comes with a large 3,500mAh battery. Coupled with the power-efficient Snapdragon 660AIE processor with excellent AI-assisted power management features, expect all-day battery life.

In terms of software, the Realme 2 Pro runs ColorOS 5.2, built on top of Android 8.1 Oreo. Realme has opted for a plain vanilla Android experience, which means one things – snappy, responsive performance.

Realme has added some handy features of their own though. From easy screenshot using three fingers, to easy cable-less phone cloning. If you’re into gaming, Realme’s Game Space can spontaneously collect and optimise over 40 popular games. There’s also deep optimisation for current hot games amongst the youth – PUBG Mobile and AOV. The mode can dynamically push up frame rates as well as up image quality for a better gaming experience.

Overall, the Realme 2 Pro offers incredible value for the price. It’s well-designed, packs beefy hardware and includes some handy extras to enhance user experience.
