OPPO R15 Pro: A real OPPO flagship at long last

OPPO R15 Pro

After the usual spate of teasers, OPPO’s true flagship device – the OPPO R15 Pro, has landed on Malaysian soil. First released in China, the R15 Pro packs top-notch specs including strong cameras and VOOC charging.

Design-wise the OPPO R15 Pro isn’t a bad looker at all, with splashes of the OPPO F7. It does have slightly better build quality with a seamless blend of glass and metal. Be forewarned, while it’s shiny and pretty-looking, it’s also a fingerprint magnet.

What’s a little disappointing is that the China variant comes with IP67 dust- and water-resistance but the Malaysian model does not. Why the omission, OPPO?

The notch trend is not going away anytime soon, so I’ll reserve my comments on this “iPhone X compromise”. That said, the notch isn’t overly conspicuous because it’s much narrower than on the original notch artist (or arguably the Essential phone that’s pretty much dead in the water).

The R15 Pro offers a 6.28-inch OLED Super View Full-screen (1080×2280) display with a 19:9 screen aspect ratio. It has minimal bezel, delivering an astonishing 90 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Under the hood, the device boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset backed by 6GB of RAM and inbuilt 128GB of storage. If you find that inadequate, feel free to plug in a microSD card for an additional 256GB.

In the camera department, the R15 Pro unsurprisingly packs a dual-camera system, arranged in a horizontal orientation. It’s the world’s first smartphone to make use of the new Sony IMX519 sensor – 16MP f/1.7 primary and 20MP f/1.7 secondary.

Following the trend of Portrait Lighting, the R15 Pro also has its selection of studio lighting to choose from.

The front camera doesn’t disappoint, a 20MP unit with HDR and AI-enhanced beautification as well as AR stickers.

The device gets its juice from a fairly large 3,400mAh battery and it gets the benefit of the excellent VOOC fast charging technology.

In the software stakes, the OPPO R15 Pro runs ColorOS 5.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo.
