After quietly testing the option last November, Netflix today officially rolled out a new, cheaper plan for Malaysian subscribers. The mobile-only plan costs just MYR17 per month, about 50 percent cheaper than the current basic plan.
The Mobile plan is tailored to people who binge-watch Netflix content on-the-go. For MYR17 per month, you’ll get to watch the full catalogue of TV series, movies, and documentaries on your mobile phone or tablet in standard definition (SD).
This follows the introduction of the plan for the Indian market in July this year. Malaysia is the first country in Southeast Asia to get the mobile-only plan.
Why Malaysia?
According to Netflix, 88 percent of Malaysians own smartphones making it a truly “mobile-first” country. Out of this, 7 out of 10 mobile users use their smart devices to download or stream entertainment. It was revealed that Malaysians watch 2x more Netflix on their mobile than any other country in the world.
So what’s the plan?

Note that if you plan to watch Netflix on multiple devices though, it makes more sense to subscribe to the Standard plan, or Premium if there are multiple users or more than two screens at a time. You’ll also enjoy higher definition video (HD and Ultra HD) for an even better experience.
That said, the Mobile plan is a low barrier of entry for new users to the platform. It’s also a timely move, looking at the impending arrival of Apple TV+ coming on 1 November.
