Huawei nova 3i gets GPU Turbo update

Huawei nova 3i GPU Turbo

Mobile gaming is huge. And if you haven’t heard, GPU Turbo is a big thing for Huawei and honor devices. After debuting on the gaming-focused honor Play, the graphics-enhancing technology is heading to Huawei’s nova 3i smartphone as a software update.

In a nutshell, GPU Turbo is a hardware-software integration solution that increases graphics performance. The technology turbocharges performance on the Kirin 970 and new Kirin 710 chipsets which unlocks the full potential for demanding 3D games as well as AR and VR applications.

GPU Turbo boosts performance

GPU Turbo’s impressive graphics enhancement capabilities are made possible by re-engineering how graphics are processed at system level.

With GPU Turbo enabled, graphics processing improves by up to 60 percent, while reducing energy consumption by 30 percent. With reduced consumption, naturally the device will run cooler as well. That’s not all, you’ll also see improved graphics quality, even if the game doesn’t support HDR.

Based on internal tests, a device like Huawei sub-brand’s honor Play can deliver 30 minutes more game time than the iPhone X, and roughly 15 minutes more than a Snapdragon 845-powered smartphone.

It will also deliver 5fps more than Xiaomi’s Black Shark, and up to 10fps more than a Snapdragon 845-powered smartphone.

Those are mighty impressive numbers, considering Adreno GPUs are proven to be more powerful than Mali equivalents used by Huawei’s Kirin-based devices.

But that’s not all the magic GPU Turbo can deliver. There’s something called Smart Shock 4D that gives the device a “Dual-Shock”-like experience – with vibrating effects during gameplay.

This applies to selected games like PUBG Mobile.

Apart from mobile gaming, GPU Turbo will deliver an optimised EMUI experience for supported Huawei devices.

As a quick refresher, the nova 3i is the successor to the nova 2i, featuring a mid-range 12nm Kirin 710 chip with AI. The device packs 4GB of RAM and a generous 128GB of onboard storage. Battery-wise, it gets a 3,340mAh cell that charges up via micro-USB.

The device rocks a 6.3-inch FHD+ display (2340×1080) with a 19.5:9 screen aspect ratio.

In terms of shooters, the nova 3i features a 16MP + 2MP camera combo on the rear, while the front gets a 24MP f/2.0 + 2MP setup.
