Dyson today unveiled a slew of new products that control and personalise our environments. Headlining the fresh lineup is the Dyson V11 cord-free vacuum–it’s most powerful and intelligent yet.
The Dyson V11 vacuum is the result of more than a decade of cord-free vacuum and Dyson digital motor development. According to Dyson, 315 engineers were involved in the project, with over 32,500 parts prototyped.
We don’t usually look at a vacuum cleaner and think “this is cutting-edge piece of technology” but lo and behold, Dyson’s latest masterpiece will ultimately change your mind.
“We’ve been developing vacuums for over 25 years. The evolution never stops. With the Dyson V11 cord-free vacuum our focus was not only improving performance, but on adding intelligence to genuinely assist people’s cleaning,” says founder James Dyson.
Here’s how the Dyson V11 vacuum is more intelligent. There are three microprocessors on board the Dyson V11 vacuum that monitors performance up to 8,000 times a second. They’re located in the Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS) inside the High Torque cleaner head; inside the Dyson digital motor V11; and inside the battery.
These advances enable the vacuum to automatically adjust suction depending on floor type: hard flooring and carpets. The DLS system intelligently detects brush bar resistance up to 360 times a second and automatically communicates with the motor and battery’s microprocessors to change suction power in real time.
The High Torque cleaner head is Dyson’s most powerful cord-free cleaner head ever. It features stiff nylon bristles that drive deep into carpet to remove dirt, and anti-static carbon fibre filaments that capture dust from hard floors and crevices. An integrated digital motor spins the brush bar up to 60 times a second.
The Dyson V11 vacuum now integrates an on board LED screen , so you’ll be able to select a power mode (Eco, Auto and Boost) and to see who much runtime is remaining. The screen also reminds you when it’s time to clean the filters; informs you of any blockages and how to clean them. It will also notify you if a filter isn’t connected properly.
Being a cord-free vacuum, it’s imperative that the battery can keep up with your chores, especially if you’ve got a big home. The Dyson V11 features the most powerful battery to date, packing seven larger, high-capacity cells with nickel-cobalt-aluminum cathodes to not only last longer but deliver more suction power.
The vacuum’s battery and monitoring system work together to “learn” how you use the vacuum over time to calculate remaining runtime.
The heart of the Dyson V11 is the redesigned Dyson digital motor V11. The new digital motor spins up to 125,000rpm and features a new triple diffuser. The first two diffusers straighten airflow and reduce turbulence, helping to increase suction. The third diffuser further reduces noise and improves acoustic performance.
Dyson engineers also redesigned the impeller–the part of the motor that drives the air–specifically the blades, which are now longer and thinner. The new blades increase the area in contact with the air, without increasing the impeller’s mass. This results in reduced loading on the blades, reducing air leakage and increasing efficiency of air movement.
The impeller blade profile has also been enhanced–each blade now forms an “S” shape to match the shape of the shroud where the impeller sits. This enables a clearance of a fraction of a millimetre between the blade tips and the shroud, resulting in reduced air leakage and increased efficiency.
Dyson also utilised aerospace materials in the motor including phenolic compound casing, found in satellites, which provides a high strength to weight ratio.
The motor’s ceramic impeller shaft is cured at 1600C to make it three times stiffer than steel, but at half the density. Additionally, 880 layers of paper-thin laminated steel generate the magnetic fields to spin the motor. Also, the impeller is made from Polyether Ether Ketone and carbon fibre composite, the same materials found inside high-intensity pistons.
In terms of filtration, the Dyson V11 vacuum’s fully sealed filtration system captures 99.97 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns. Fourteen cyclones generate forces of more than 79,000g to fling microscopic particles such as pollen and bacteria–into the bin.
