Apple’s “Shot on iPhone” Chinese New Year short film “Daughter” stars Zhou Xun

Shot on iPhone CNY film "Daughter"

Following what it has done for the past several years, Apple once again is celebrating Chinese New Year with a short film entitled “Daughter.” The 8-minute long film is part of its “Shot on iPhone” series.

The heart-wrenching short film stars the popular leading Chinese actress Zhou Xun and is directed by Theodore Melfi. You may recognise Theodore from his Best Picture Oscar-nominated film “Hidden Figures.” Cinematography is by Lawrence Sher.

The film is shot entirely on the iPhone 11 Pro.

Apple describes the film as below:

A film about three generations of Chinese women coming together at Chinese New Year. Shot on iPhone 11 Pro. Directed by Theodore Melfi. Cinematography by Lawrence Sher. Starring Zhou Xun, China’s leading actress.

As usual, Apple has also released a companion behind-the-scenes video. Some scenes require additional equipment to mount the iPhone while in others, the iPhone does without any additional gear.

She praised the iPhone for its low light performance and its stabilisation capabilities.

Apple’s Chinese New Year videos have been beautifully shot, with incredible story-telling. This year is no different.

Happy Chinese New Year!
