Apple to launch 5.5-inch entry-level iPhone 9

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus

Based on was found in iOS 14 code, 9to5Mac revealed new details about Apple’s upcoming entry-level iPhone 9. It looks like Apple isn’t releasing a single entry-level model, but two—also a bigger 5.5-inch “iPhone 9 Plus” to replace both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus devices.

Rumours of the 4.7-inch iPhone 9 have been reported earlier through the supply chain and according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device will pack 64GB or 128GB of onboard storage and start at USD399. It will feature a physical solid-state Home button with TouchID built-in. The bigger Plus model is expected to start at USD499.

Evidence suggests that both devices will run the A13 Bionic chip, the same processor that drives the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

The new models are expected to retain the design of the iPhone 8 series, and will support Apple Pay and the Express Transit feature, something not available on some older iPhones. The new phones will be able to scan NFC tag in the background, a feature possible only with the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and the iPhone 11.

9to5Mac said the iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus names are speculative and rumours have claimed they will be called the iPhone SE 2.

Apple is rumoured to launch the 4.7-inch “iPhone SE 2” at the end of much March and this may include the bigger 5.5-inch model as well.
