Tapp is a new super customisable mobile service that even lets you sell back unused quota

Look out ookyo, there’s a new digital kid in town. Tapp, a prepaid mobile service that runs on Digi’s 4G+ network, lets you create your own mobile plan that suits your budget and exact needs.

It’s time to take back control

Forget the conventional way of doing things. Instead of telcos dictating how much data you need, or how many call minutes and validity, with tapp you dictate what’s best for you.

Whatever type of user you are – data-heavy or voice-skewed, you can customise your plan however you want.

And the great thing is, you can not only modify your plan at any time, but also sell back unused data quota. Note that this feature has not been activated yet, but it is coming soon.

In any case, this a kind of flexible you’ll not find anywhere at this juncture.

You can start with a MYR10 monthly budget, or MYR100 if you have deeper pockets. The beauty of it is that it’s up to you.

What’s tapp?

Tapp means “telco in an app” and it is exactly that. It’s a prepaid service that is digitally-driven, and runs principally from the tapp app.

The app is currently in beta, and is available for free on Google Play. The app lets you manage your entire mobile experience, from topping up to customising and modifying your plan, as well as manage what app uses data in the background.

A separate app, tappConnect lets you make free tapp-to-tapp calls and messages. Rates to non-tapp users are shown upfront before you make a call or send a message.

Signing up is a tap away

First thing’s first. You’ll need to download the main tapp app from Google Play. Pick a number by entering your favourite last four digits. You can sign up using your Facebook or Google ID. Fill in your personal and contact details and get a SIM card shipped to you for free. For a limited time, you can get three month’s worth of Instagram access for free when you activate the tapp SIM.

A tapp account comes with MYR3.00 credit out-of-the-box.

To top up, you can do this via internet banking, debit or credit card; or you can buy a Digi reload voucher.

A few important things to note

Being a brand new service there are limitations. Firstly, you will not be able to the mobile hotspot feature. There’s also no support for certain services like Netflix, Uber and Snapchat.

A big bummer (like with ookyo) is the lack of support for iOS devices. So no tapp on iPhones. For now.

Similarly, tapp also requires a VPN connection to work. This is to provide the flexibility, control and transparency of the service.

On the flip side, there’s no support for international roaming at the moment.

You’ll also be unable to port in or port out your number at this point in time.

Tapp says it is working to resolve these limitations.

Hey, it works without a SIM too

What’s interesting is that you can still create a tapp account without a SIM, although it will limit access to most of tapp’s features. You’ll be able to control how apps use your data, top up your tap account, or make free calls and send messages for free to other tapp users.

If you’re thinking, “hey, that sounds like the Yes 4G’s Yes ID,” you’re absolutely right. Yes ID was ground-breaking at the time, a SIM-less, fully-digital, all-IP mobile service.

Give tapp a shot

I’ve registered for a tapp account and signed up for a free SIM. The sign up process is intuitive and hassle-free, so if you’re looking for a prepaid service you may want to give tapp a try.
