LEAGOO Shark 1 bites its way through days with massive 6,300mAh battery

LEAGOO Shark 1

LEAGOO isn’t new in the Malaysian market, but it’s a lesser known brand amongst its Chinese counterparts. Entrenched in the budget and mid-range smartphone market, it has launched its best yet – LEAGOO Shark 1 – a 6-inch phablet with a shockingly big 6,300mAh battery.

The Shark 1 flagship smartphone sports a 6-inch Full HD LTPS display (@ 368PPI), protected by Gorilla Glass 4. Coming in three colours – Modern Gold, Satin Silver and Elegant Black, the Shark 1 weighs 239g an 8.5mm thin. The design is a cross between the Huawei Mate 8 and a Redmi Note 3, which isn’t a bad thing.

You may be wondering why it carries some heft. Well, its claim to fame is the unbelievably massive 6,300mAh battery. With moderate use, LEAGOO claims you can go up to 3.5 days. It will still return two days of battery life with heavy use. Highly impressive. Not only that, it features Pump Express Flash Charge technology that rapid charges the big battery. With the supplied 9V/3A charger, you can give the Shark 1 a full day’s worth of juice with only 30 minutes of charging.

Under the hood, the Shark 1 uses the services of the 64-bit octa-core MediaTek MT6753, mated to a generous 3GB RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. The built-in storage is a little disappointing, but you’ll be able to expand further via microSD (up to 128GB).

It’s not a surprise that it packs a Sony-sourced 13MP f.2.0 BSI rear camera, complemented by a 5MP front-facing unit. This should return some favourable shots.

Unsurprising as well, for current crop of phones, is the presence of a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. LEAGOO says it unlocks in 0.39 seconds. Not the fastest, naturally, but still pretty quick.

It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box, with LEAGOO’s proprietary OS v1.2 running on top.

Pricing and availability

The LEAGOO Shark 1 retails at MYR999, and is available at LEAGOO’s flagship store at Low Yat Plaza, as well as authorized resellers.

Initial thoughts

The Shark 1 joins the likes of the Lenovo Vibe P1 (5,000mAh battery, MYR1,199) and Doogee T6 (6,250mAh, MYR599) offering massive amount of juice and value-for-money specs.

Priced at below MYR1,000, it looks to be a solid buy for people who specifically need long life battery.
