In true stealth mode, Apple’s ‘hobby’ device – the Apple TV set-top box sold close to 10 million units in 2013, raking in sales revenue of more than US$1 billion. Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed at Apple’s annual stockholders meeting in Cupertino today that this is roughly double the 5 million units it sold in 2012.

The head honcho also added that “it’s a little more difficult to call it a hobby these days.”

Asymco’s Horace Dediu posted a chart over Twitter showing the growth of Apple TV sales over the past seven years.

Apple has been long rumoured to be working on a full-fledged television set, aside from an all-new set-top box.

With iOS as its base, Apple has also been rumoured move into gaming in a big way with the Apple TV, and possibly even introduce a gaming controller. Apple recently added gaming controller support to iOS 7 called MFi controllers.

Currently limited in terms of apps, Apple is also reportedly preparing an Apple TV SDK in order for third party developers to develop apps for the platform. Will we see a full-blown App Store on Apple TV soon?
