Let’s face it, different people have different needs and wants. When it comes to a telco plan, things can get rather convoluted, sometimes sneakily confusing even. But does it really have to be? What if there was a better way, a better option?
By now, you must have heard about a new mobile service called Yoodo. I know, you’re probably thinking, “What? Yet another telco?” And I don’t blame you. For a nation of just 30 million people, we seem to have an oversupply (just like we do malls, to be honest).
But hold your horses. I discovered that Yoodo is ground-breaking on several levels, setting itself apart from the rest of the pack.
The premise of Yoodo is simple: you choose. Because you know best. It’s about wrestling back control from your telco who have long dictated what you can or can’t do. It’s about you deciding what you need and want in a telco plan.
In a nutshell, Yoodo is a 100% digital service and prides itself to be the first truly customisable mobile service. It’s not a prepaid nor a postpaid plan. Consider it a hybrid plan with no commitment while offering ultimate flexibility.
You may have heard about customisability by competing telco products. However, none is quite like Yoodo. In fact, this new startup offers over 1,000 possible combinations. You set a budget you’d like to spend in a month, then you customise how much data, voice calls, or SMS you’ll need.
You can even add-on additional data specifically for Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, as well as for roaming and IDD calls.
Why Yoodo rocks
While I’m completely sold at the idea of customisability of my telco plan, the beauty about Yoodo is its entire user experience.
Firstly, being a 100% digital service, everything runs from the free Yoodo app, which by the way is available on both Android and iOS.
The app lets you order a free SIM and it powers much of the service’s features and customisability. Activation of the SIM is also done through the app.
The cool thing is, you can opt for Express Delivery where your SIM will be delivered to you within two hours (if you’re in the Klang Valley, for a small charge of MYR15). Alternatively, you can opt for a standard delivery that takes between 1-3 days.
Next, MNP is available meaning you can easily keep your existing number and port it to Yoodo. This is not available on several rival services.
Also, international roaming is offered at standard roaming rates, so you’ll never be caught without connectivity when you’re travelling abroad. Note that international roaming is available in selected countries at the moment, but Yoodo is extending this progressively.
Importantly, Yoodo does not require you to install a VPN (virtual private network) on your smartphone. As seen on several rival products, a VPN can be annoying and cumbersome.
And by the way, you can tether your connection without restriction or extra charges. A feature very important to some, including myself.
What’s great is that there are no hidden charges, nor any conditions to usage, certainly no throttling or limits to data speeds, and thankfully no such nonsense as “weekend data” or “late night data.”
As mentioned, there are no contracts, so you don’t have to worry about late payments. You can opt in and out of monthly payments with the auto-renewal function. All you need to do is simply add a debit or credit card on file.
How to get started
- Download and install the Yoodo app from Google Play or Apple App Store
- Order a Yoodo SIM via the app or through the website
- Receive the SIM within 2 hours (Klang Valley only), or within 1-3 days nationwide
- Activate the SIM via the app
- Manage your plan, track your usage, buy add-ons or change your plan via the app.
Chinese New Year offer
As part of a Chinese New Year offer from now until 2 March 2018, Yoodo is offering a special booster add-on. For just MYR8, you’ll get 8GB of data and this data is valid until your plan is renewed. The cool thing is that there is no limit as to how many booster add-ons you can buy, so fire away! Just remember to do it before the promo period ends.
