Full screen or near bezel-less smartphones are on trend at the moment, but let’s not forget who started it all. Tech upstart Xiaomi was first out of the blocks with the ground-breaking Mi Mix concept back in 2016. And now the company is integrating similar tech into its new Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus devices.
Redmi devices have single-handedly propelled Xiaomi to cult like status back in its home country of China, and subsequently making it a global powerhouse it is currently.
Both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus pack huge immersive displays into a compact form factor, and are offered at below MYR1,000.
The Redmi 5 features a 5.7-inch HD (1440×720) display, while its bigger sibling packs a 5.99-inch FHD+ (2160×1080) display. Both feature rounded display corners that complements the four-sided curved design.
Aside from the near bezel-less 18:9 displays, both devices boast Qualcomm’s 14nm octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor, something unseen in this category.
In the camera department, the devices com with single 12MP rear cameras sporting large 1.25um pixel sensors. Larger pixels help capture more light and offer better low light performance.
On the front, the Redmi 5/Redmi 5 Plus boast a 5MP camera with front-facing selfie light to ensure selfies are always well-lit, even in low-light conditions. Additionally, there’s Xiaomi’s Beautify 3.0 software to further enhance and optimise selfies.
With the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset, large 3,300 and 4,000mAh batteries as well as enhancements in MIUI 9, expect both devices to deliver all-day battery life.
Xiaomi claims the Redmi 5 Plus can deliver up to 14 hours of continuous video playback, and nearly 8 hours of continuous gaming, on a single charge.

The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are offered in Black, Gold and Blue for MYR679 and MYR749 respectively.
