Vivid Sydney continues to be the world’s biggest festival of light, music and ideas with a record-breaking 2.3 million visitors flogging the city this year.

According to the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres, attendance this year topped last year’s attendance of 1.7 million by 35.4%. This is by the far the biggest Vivid Sydney show yet.

A remarkable 88,300 Vivid Sydney packages were sold for this year’s show, up 104% from previous year’s.

Lights

Vivid Sydney is an international festival of light, music and ideas, the biggest in the world. The 23-day festival features many of the world’s most creative talents–and transforms Sydney into a magical city of light sculptures, cutting-edge light installations and grand-scale projections.

The show featured more than 90 light installations and projections crafted by more than 150 artists from 23 different countries.

This year’s Vivid Sydney was by far the biggest, and most breathtaking, including cutting-edge showcases like the Drone 100 performance; the virtual reality Bjork Digital ExhibitionVivid Live;Sounds Cells at the Sydney Opera House; Eyes on the Harbour featuring Intel RealSense technology; and smaller but no less interesting installations like Plecstrum; Wormhole Galaxy; Tree Hugger, PTOLEMi and Harbour Lights.

Music

Meanwhile, Vivid Music hosted an eclectic range of live performances and unique musical collaborations. The highlight is Vivid LIVE, a program of cutting-edge music that took place at the iconic Sydney Opera House. Vivid Music this year recorded more than 132,000 attendees at 190 performances staged across the city.

Ideas

On the other hand, Vivid Ideas is a platform for business and creative leaders to gather and share, spanning innovation, creativity and professional development across multiple sectors. Over 54,000 attendees participated in the Vivid Ideas program. There was a total of 658 speakers participating in 183 Vivid Ideas events.

Favourites amongst visitors at Vivid Sydney this year were the new precincts at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Taronga Zoo. Additionally, the spectacular Songlines projection onto the Sydney Opera House Sails that celebrates Indigenous Australian culture was also a star attraction.

Drone 100 Vivid Sydney

One of my personal favourites was Intel’s Drone 100 show, a spectacular symphony of music and light, featuring 100 drones “dancing in the sky,” backed by the Sydney Youth Orchestra. This world-record-holding drone performance made a public debut at Vivid Sydney, and happened for five nights.

Vivid Sydney

Now in its eight year, Vivid Sydney is owned and managed by Destination NSW–the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency. Major partners include Intel and Huawei.
