Samsung said on Tuesday that it aims to launch a foldable smartphone under the Galaxy Note brand, next year.
Koh Dong-jin, president of mobile business at Samsung said there are several challenges to overcome although the consumer electronics giant has its eyes on 2018. The bendable device was previously dubbed “Galaxy X.”
Remember Samsung’s intriguing bendable AMOLED display concept in 2012? Youm, as it was called is a foldable phone that bends like a flip phone.
Of course, Samsung isn’t the only one exploring curved and pliable displays. LG and Lenovo have shown off prototypes recently. LG has patents for a foldable tablet-a smartphone-shaped device that can unfold into a larger tablet.
Lenovo also has a 5.5-inch tablet dubbed the Folio that converts into a 7.8-inch bigger tablet.
While we wait for the foldable display to be perfected and commercialised, we’ve to settle for edge-to-edge displays that curve at the edges, as seen on the Galaxy S8, S8+ and Note8 devices.
At a press briefing with South Korean media, the mobile president said that the Note8 beat expectations, despite it being more expensive than its past devices. The flagship phablet has received more than 650,000 units of pre-orders in South Korea before its Friday launch.
