While you wait for your chance to get a seat in the cinemas for this blockbuster, some of you may already have an idea of what to expect from this movie, while others may just shrug off any expectations whatsoever in fear of disappointment and enter the cinema ‘naked’. Me, on the other hand had the privilege of a media screening for “The Avengers” courtesy of TGV Cinemas in their IMAX 3D Theatre.
While some of its lead up instalments didn’t enjoy as much success as Iron Man, “The Avengers” in my opinion would definitely be the best among them, and its not because it has all your lovable characters in it.
As many of you may already know, “The Avengers” will have actors Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth(Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) reprising their roles from the previous “Introductory” installments of the comic characters. (Iron Man I & II, Thor and Captain America)
Mark Ruffalo replaces Edward Norton as “Bruce Banner/the Hulk” while Jeremy Renner plays “Hawkeye” with Tom Hiddleston remaining as “Loki”.
At first, I had negative impressions about the movie, firstly having Hawkeye without his trademark mask, Edward Norton being replaced as the Hulk, then was even more upset when I was seated 4 rows from the screen and given very uncomfortable 3D glasses to wear (a problem I have in ANY 3D theater). However, in spite of all these discomforts, I came out of the cinema extremely satisfied.
While I was still a little unsatisfied with Mark Ruffalo playing Bruce Banner (I think Edward Norton pulled of the “I’m a vulnerable scientist but I turn into a huge angry green man” much better than he did), he wasn’t all that bad – in fact, in some cases he was good. Hawkeye wasn’t all that bad either, although comic fans might rage about his dress code, having him in a subtle outfit fits the movie more.
As what you would expect from Joss Whedon and “The Avengers”, there isn’t just mindless action in this movie (although some were mindless, they were funny nonetheless); there were tons of humorous puns and jokes, awesome… and I mean awesome combat scenes and the 3D experience for the movie in the IMAX Theater made it very much better. Now, with that being said, do NOT expect a movie like this to have a very deep story line. If you wanted that, read a novel. This movie expects you to already know the characters and how they behave, so character development if any, is limited to showing of their combat skills in epic scale battles and in “one against many” scenarios. “The Avengers” is in cinemas nationwide (as of 27 April 2012) and you may see me standing next to you buying a set of tickets despite having already seen it. That’s how good it was.
