Is there stopping Xiaomi? The resurgent China internet company is in rapid churn mode, and it doesn’t look like it’s taking a break. Next to make an appearance are two ultra-affordable devices – the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A. Xiaomi continues to pack high quality gear and offer them at “honest pricing.”
At a glance, the Redmi 6 looks identical to the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus but sports the latest octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 chipset. It’s the first smartphone in its price range to use a 12nm platform. Xiaomi says the chip consumes 48 percent less power than comparable 28nm chipsets. Featuring ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, it offers balanced performance and power efficiency.
The device offers a 5.45-inch 18:9 HD display with a screen-to-body ratio of 80.5 percent. The display is housed in a polycarbonate body that sports a brushed metal look and symmetrically curved edges.
For a budget device, it offers an impressive 12MP + 5MP dual-camera setup. The main sensor has 1.25 micron pixels – large pixels that take in more light than smaller pixel sizes. This translates to better photo quality and reduced noise especially in low-light conditions.
The camera also features PDAF that ensures fast focus.
On the front, it gets a 5MP selfie camera that’s supported by Xiaomi’s AI Portrait mode. Impressive for a device at this price point.
The Redmi 6A on the other hand is housed in the same body and offers the same display as the Redmi 6. It however gets a lower-end MediaTek Helio A22 SoC, also built on the 12nm process.
It gets a 3,000mAh battery that charges up via micro-USB. Impressively, the battery has a standby time of 19 days.
In the optics stakes, the Redmi 6A packs a 13MP rear camera with PDAF and a 5MP front shooter that supports AI Portrait mode.
