Realme X2 Pro: Realme’s real bad*ss flagship

Realme X2 Pro

Realme, the young, aspiring offshoot of OPPO, has quickly carved a niche for itself with its brand of neatly-packaged, aggressively-priced smartphones. Up until now, it’s been dwelling in the value- and mid-range segment with hit-sellers like the Realme 2 and Realme 3 series. But not anymore. On Monday, the Chinese smartphone maker introduced its first “proper” flagship device in Malaysia—the Realme X2 Pro.

What’s a proper flagship, you ask? How about the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ silicon, 90Hz display and 50W SuperVOOC fast charging, amongst other things? Right.

And how about bundling this with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, all for MYR2,399?

Compelling would be an understatement.

First thing’s first. Let’s touch on the display. Let me just say that if you’ve never experienced fast refresh display rates, then you don’t know what you’re missing. Once you have, however, everything else just feels… slow. In the market today, there are only several devices with 90Hz displays—and they’re gaming-focused phones like the ASUS ROG Phone 2, Razer Phone 2, or the OnePlus 7.

The Realme X2 Pro boasts a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and capable of a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. That’s mighty impressive to say the least. The display also integrates an in-display fingerprint scanner.

There’s a tiny teardrop notch that houses the front 16MP f/2.0 selfie shooter; otherwise the front is clean as a whistle, with tiny bezels all round.

Aesthetically, the Realme X2 Pro is unassuming and minimalist, almost Pocophone-like. I’m not sure I like where the Realme logo is positioned, but overall the look is clean and unpretentious, if a little plain Jane.

In the optics department, aside from the front-facing camera, is a quad main camera system. It comprises a 64MP wide-angle camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 13MP telephoto camera, and 2MP depth camera.

Keeping things juiced is a large 4,000mAh battery that supports 50W SuperVOOC Flash Charge via USB-C. The fast-charging tech will get the device fully charged in just 35 minutes.
