Polaroid Insta-Share Printer Moto Mod is real

Polaroid Insta-Share Printer Moto Mod

Motorola isn’t the first in the modular smartphone game; that distinction goes to LG with its G5 in 2016. Let’s not forget Google’s vapourware Project Aria. That said, Moto is currently the sole phone maker actively pursuing the form factor via its Moto Mods platform.

Moto Mods made its debut at IFA 2016, alongside the flagship Moto Z and Moto Z Play smartphones. They allow you to snap on accessories and feature extensions to Moto Z devices.

It’s a fantastic idea. There are six embedded magnets on each Moto Mods module which help the modules to accurately align to the device. At the bottom of Moto Mods capable devices like the Moto Z, is the unique 16-gold pin connector that enables communication between mods and phone.

Moto Z + Moto Mods

There has been some cool mods since its introduction. There’s my favourite Hasselblad True Zoom mod, Moto Insta-Share Projector, JBL SoundBoost, Incipio offGRID Power Pack; and the most recent Moto GamePad, Moto 360 camera, TurboPower Pack, Incipio Vehicle Dock and JBL SoundBoost 2. Let’s not forget Moto Style Shell mods, including several with wireless charging.

But it gets more interesting. At MWC 2017, Motorola showed off some whacky concepts including a tablet dock ala ASUS Padfone, a multi-SIM mod, and a Polaroid mod.

If like me, you’re intrigued by the Polaroid mod, then this should put a smile on your face.

The Polaroid Insta-Share Printer mod looks to be real, as seen by a real-life image of it leaked in the wild.

The printer mod is a lot like how mini portable printers work, as seen on the LG Pocket Photo Mobile Printer, HP Sprocket or Polaroid’s own ZIP Instant Photoprinter.

But instead of carrying a separate device, you literally just need to snap on the Polaroid mod on your Moto Z, Moto Z Play, or Moto Z2 Play.

It comes with its own built-in battery, has a USB-C port and charge indicator lights. The printer presumably uses ZINK Zero Ink paper (2×3-inch prints).

There’s no information on availability nor pricing at the moment.
