OPPO is set to launch the new OPPO A9 2020 next week—the smartphone maker’s first mid-range device with a quad-cam setup. The new A series mid-range smartphone also features a large 5,000mAh battery and stereo speakers.

Not much official specs for Malaysia out at the moment, although OPPO Pakistan had revealed details on its website earlier. The A9 2020 packs a 6.5-inch HD+ display (1600×720) and is powered by a Snapdragon 665 processor. It will come bundled with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Design-wise, as revealed by my colleagues at SoyaCincau, the A9 2020 looks pleasant if familiar. It has a tiny water drop notch on the front while its curved back has a now common gradient effect.

The quad-cam system on the rear consists of a primary 48MP shooter (with Ultra Night mode), secondary 8MP 119-degree ultra-wide-angle lens camera, 2MP mono lens (ala Huawei P and Mate series) and a 2MP Portrait aka depth lens.

OPPO finally moves to a USB-C port for its mid-range segment device, and it comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

According to OPPO, the A9 2020’s stereo speakers support Dolby Atmos audio technology.

The OPPO A9 2020 will be coming to Malaysia on 18 September and singer-actress Ayda Jebat is back again as the official ambassador.

In a separate media statement, OPPO said that it has streamlined its products to three main lineups: Reno for the creative types; Find for cutting-edge technology; and A Series for all-day entertainment.

OPPO’s naming convention for the A series may have something to do with Samsung’s ever-expanding A series line, but I’m purely speculating here. Regardless, the MYR1,000-MYR1,500 segment is a fiercely competitive one, so it will be interesting how OPPO prices the A9 2020 when it debuts next week.

Stay tuned!
