Nokia 8.1 goes on sale today

Nokia 8.1

The Nokia 8.1 – Nokia’s latest “value flagship” device officially hits Malaysian stores today, 18 January 2019. While it seemingly shares the same “8” series number, the Nokia 8.1 isn’t the successor to the flagship Nokia 8. It retails for MYR1,699.

As a refresher, the Nokia 8.1 comes with a 6.18-inch FHD+ edge-to-edge display, housed in a body made of 6000-series aluminium sandwiched by curved glass. It’s signature Nokia build and design here – sleek and premium.

The PureDisplay screen technology brings superior contrast, supporting HDR10 as well as vibrant, accurate colours. The screen touts 500 nits of brightness, 96 percent colour gamut and 1500:1 contrast ratio.

Underneath, the Nokia 8.1 is powered Qualcomm’s best mid-range SoC – the Snapdragon 710 Mobile Platform that’s integrated with an AI engine and supports AR Core.

It packs 4GB of RAM and a basic 64GB of onboard storage. There’s microSD support via a hybrid card tray, with memory expandable to an additional 400GB.

On paper, the phone sounds impressive in the camera department – a 12MP main shooter with ZEISS Optics, 14 micron pixels, a 1/2.55-inch sensor, OIS, EIS and a dual-LED flash. Additionally, there’s a 13MP fixed focus depth-sensing secondary camera.

Powering the device is a fairly large 3,500mAh battery that supports fast-charging.

The device runs Android 9 Pie as part of the Android One programme. It is guaranteed to receive three years of monthly security patches and two major OS updates.
