Entry-level Nokia 2.2 joins Android One family

Nokia 2.2

HMD Global has taken the wraps off the new Nokia 2.2, its first entry-level and 2 series Nokia to be part of the Android One programme. It ships with Android 9 Pie and is Android Q-ready.

HMD folks are touting the AI experience that powers the Nokia 2.2’s “sophisticated low light image fusion and Google Lens.” And running Android One, the device is future-proofed—guaranteed to receive two years of OS upgrades (including the upcoming Android Q release) as well as three years of monthly security updates.

Nokia 2.2

Impressively for a budget phone, the Nokia 2.2 boasts AI-powered low light image fusion—a similar technique the flagship Huawei Mate and P series smartphones pioneered and employed. The camera captures multiple images simultaneously and through advanced algorithms, creates a single image with more light, greater detail and less noise.

Built-in HDR mode ensures greater dynamic range in every shot while Google Photos’ AI-powered features like “Colour Pop,” “Colourise” and “Beautify” make your photos stand out further.

The Nokia 2.2 features a 13MP 1/3-inch 1.12-micron pixel f/2.2 main shooter with single LED flash and a 5MP fixed focus selfie camera.

A nice addition is the support for “Face Unlock” and Google Lens, something not seen in a device in this price range. Google Lens is especially cool, letting you “search what you see”—simply point the camera lens to an object and it will display relevant search results related to the product/object.

The Nokia 2.2 offers an edge-to-edge 400-nit 5.71-inch HD+ display with a discreet notch, delivering a compact form factor with a big screen.

The phone is powered by a quad-core MediaTek A22 CPU and comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. If you find storage insufficient, you can easily upgrade via microSD (up to 400GB).

As an icing on the cake, the device also features a dedicated Google Assistant button, again, not seen on a device in this price range.

It comes juiced by a 3,000mAh battery that charges up via micro-USB. A conventional 5W charger is provided in the box.

Fans of customisation will love that the Nokia 2.2 supports Nokia’s iconic interchangeable Xpress-on covers.

Pricing and availability

The Nokia 2.2 is available in Steel and Tungsten Black colour options and is priced at MYR399. It is available for purchase starting today, 28 June 2019.
