MWC17 LG G6

After backtracking on its modular design efforts with the LG G5 last year, LG is back to win hearts again at MWC17. With a spanking new metal and glass body, beefy internals, uprated dual-cameras and a high-res display with HDR, things look pretty nice for LG’s new 2017 flagship device.

Goodbye modular

I must admit, I’m not a fan of the LG G6 design, right off the bat. While it has a nicer finish (metal-glass) to the metal-wrapped plastic (or was it the other way around) LG G5, I find the new G6 underwhelming in the design department.

It features a brushed metal design with a metal frame. The great news is, it gets IP68 dust- and water-resistance, something we’ve not seen on a LG device.

It sports a huge 5.7-inch QHD+ LCD panel (2880×1440 pixels) with a unique 18:9 aspect ratio. The odd aspect is claimed to fit more screen real estate into a slimmer, smaller body. And by the way, the display is the first mobile smartphone display that supports HDR standards – Dolby Vision and HDR 10.

Powering the device is last year’s top SoC – the Snapdragon 821, mated to 4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of onboard UFS 2.0 storage. It supports storage expansion via microSD (2TB).

Like the excellent LG V20 I got to play with at CES 2017, the LG G6 also comes with a HiFI Quad DAC for quality audio performance.

In the optics front, the LG G6 improves upon the G5’s dual-camera setup. Unlike the Leica-powered Huawei offerings, LG’s solution features a wide-angle 125-degree f/2.4 lens, and a narrower 71-degree f/1.8 shooter. Both are now identical 13MP sensors.

On the front, it sports a 5MP f/1.9 wide-angle lens.

It packs a 3,300mAh non-removable battery with support for wireless charging.

The LG G6 runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box with the latest LG UX on top, and bundled with Google Assistant. It’s the first non-Pixel device to feature Google Assistant, after being exclusive to the Google Pixel before this.

It is being offered in Titan (silver), Black and White colour options.

Pricing and availability

The LG G6 will go on sale in South Korea on 9 March. It is expected to reach US and other markets in late March or April. God only knows if it will make it Malaysian shores, but let’s just hope, eh?

No pricing details as yet, but expect it to be around US$500-700.
