[MWC17] Huawei P10 and P10 Plus debut with Leica Summilux-H f/1.8 lens

Huawei has just unveiled the new Huawei P10 and P10 Plus flagship phones at MWC17. Superseding the P9, the first model to feature the Leica dual-lens camera system, the new duo takes things up a notch in several key areas.

The P10 improves upon its predecessor in the imaging department. Say hello to the The Leica Dual-Camera 2.0 Pro Edition camera system. Out goes the Summarit f/2.2 aperture lens. In its place is a faster Summilux-H f/1.8 lens. The upgraded lens works hand-in-hand with a 20MP monochrome and 12MP RGB sensors derived from the excellent Mate 9. It also features Huawei’s Hybrid Zoom (2x) and 4-in-1 hybrid auto-focus system.

It will be interesting to see how the new camera system performs, especially with the faster f/1.8 aperture lens. The Mate 9 already offers excellent camera performance and photo quality.

On the front is an 8MP f/1.9 selfie shooter which has an adaptive nature that adjusts zoom based on the number of users. When it detects more people in the shot, it will switch to a wider zoom.

Onboard is a big 3,200mAh battery that supports Huawei’s SuperCharge fast-charging technology, as seen on the Mate 9. A 30-minute charge time will give you a full day’s worth of juice. Charging is done via a USB Type-C port.

In terms of design, it isn’t a huge departure from the P9, though it’s slightly curvier and rounded on the corners. Strangely, the fingerprint sensor is now on the front, embedded under the glass surface.

It’s still a premium-feel metal unibody, now in various colour options. Huawei has partnered Pantone to produce new colour finishes including Ceramic White, Graphite Black, Dazzling Gold, Rose Gold, Prestige Gold, Greenery, Dazzling Blue and Mystic Silver.

The P10 features a 5.1-inch Full HD display, no change from previous generations’. It adopts the same power-efficient Kirin 960 chip from the Mate 9, paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The dual-SIM device has upgradable storage via microSD (up to 256GB).

The P10 Plus on the other hands has a bigger, better display – a 5.5-inch 2K panel.

It shares the same processor as its smaller sibling, while being mated to either a 4GB + 64GB storage option; or 6GB + 128GB storage.

Huawei’s “Machine Learning Algorithm” working together with the Kirin chip keeps things snappy. It purportedly puts an end to “Android lag” that commonly afflicts Android devices over time.
