As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has started to issue updates to its Surface RT device this week. This will mark the Redmont company’s first monthly Patch Tuesday, since the big Windows 8 launch on October 26.

The system firmware update brings performance enhancements to Microsoft’s first tablet device as well as patching several security issues.

The Surface RT tablet, essentially a stripped down Windows 8 tablet running on ARM processors, has seen modest sales despite Microsoft’s big marketing push. Microsoft expects demand to pick up with the launch of the higher end Surface Pro, which runs full-on Windows 8.

Microsoft started pre-orders of the Surface RT in mid-October and almost immediately reported a shipping delay of up to three weeks for the $499 model. The tablet went on sale on October 26 in the US and Canada via limited retail sales channels and also online from Microsoft.
