PETALING JAYA, 13 September 2012 – As the world gets more and more touch-centric with smartphones, tablets, touch-enabled notebooks and hybrid devices a common sight, the ultimate question therein – is there a place still for the venerable mouse and keyboard? Apparently yes. And Microsoft has just released a slew of Windows 8-optimised input devices for the Malaysian market, as it celebrates Microsoft Malaysia’s 20th Anniversary and the impending global launch of Windows 8 on October 29.

Microsoft Hardware has a 30-year history in hardware design and development and today introduces a line of new hardware devices that works better together with Windows 8.

Microsoft understands the needs of today’s fast paced society and as such, has combined mobility, practicality, comfort and style into its latest Hardware range. From desktop and notebook to ultrabook and tablet PCs, Microsoft’s newest accessories are the perfect companion for Windows,” said Sunny Ooi, Consumer Channels Group Director, Microsoft Malaysia.
The new lineup of mice and keyboards are loaded with features including Bluetooth connectivity and BlueTrack Technology for tracking on virtually any surface. We had the opportunity to go hands-on with the new peripherals including the yet-to-be-released Samsung ATIV Windows 8 tablet.
Wedge Touch Mouse (SRP: RM219.00)
Microsoft Wedge Touch Mouse is a full functional mouse packed into a unbelievable ultra-compact chassis. Perfect for the mobile warrior, it’s small enough to fit into your pocket. The Wedge Touch Mouse is made for Windows 8, providing four-way touch scrolling and navigation. Being Bluetooth-enabled, it offers clutter, wire-free use with your laptop or tablet. BluTrack Technology means you can use it on virtually any surface. With the handy BackPack Mode that powers the mouse down to sleep along with the computer it’s paired to, extended battery life is assured.
Wedge Mobile Keyboard (SRP: RM249.00)
The new ultra-slim, ultra-sexy Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard brings full-size keyboard functionality to a tablet. Compact, lightweight and powered by Bluetooth, the keyboard was made specifically for tablet users. The Wedge Mobile Keyboard includes some of the most commonly used features, such as Windows Hot Keys and built-in media keys. A durable cover is included to protect the keyboard from scratches and also doubles up as a tablet stand. Very nifty. Definitely our favourite.
Sculpt Touch Mouse (SRP: RM159.00)
Microsoft Sculpt Touch Mouse is a no-frills solution for smooth and easy navigation with a Windows 8-based PC, featuring a four-way touch scroll strip with haptic feedback. It also uses Bluetooth technology so you can connect it wirelessly to your tablet. We’re currently testing a unit in the office (on a Mac).
Sculpt Comfort Keyboard (SRP: RM189.00)
The ergonomic Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Keyboard features a ground-breaking split spacebar with configurable backspace functionality. The Contour Curve design creates a natural arc that promotes a comfortable, natural wrist position. RSI-sufferers would appreciate its ergonomic features including the split spacebar with configurable backspace functionality. Windows 8 hotkeys are provided for convenient access to commonly used functions.
Updated Gesture Settings for Windows 8 (RM269.00)
Also available in the market is the Microsoft Touch Mouse, which features a large touch-sensitive surface that supports one-, two-, and three-fingered gestures that are optimized for PC use. In preparation for Windows 8 impending launch, the Microsoft Touch Mouse will obtain updated functionality specifically designed for Windows 8 with new gesture settings to easily navigate the new UI. Microsoft also announced that older generation Arc Mouse will be compatible with Windows 8.
These peripherals will be available at major retailers from October 2012 onwards.
