The first Microsoft-branded Lumia lands in Malaysia.

Microsoft quietly made available the Lumia 535 Dual SIM in Malaysia last week, the first official Microsoft-branded Lumia smartphone. The Lumia 535 features the signature vibrant Lumia styling, and now with the full ‘Microsoft experience’ at a super low price of RM429.

Microsoft is pushing the Lumia 535’s feature-packed specs and affordability.

The five key unique selling propositions:

– 15GB free OneDrive cloud storage
– Microsoft Outlook built-in (for those who work)
– Connect and play with friends with XBox Live

The budget device comes with a 5-inch qHD (960×540) IPS display with Gorilla Glas 3, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 running at 1.2Ghz, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage (upgradable to 128 microSD), 5MP AF f/2.4 rear camera, FWVGA front camera, dual-SIM 3G and a big 1905mAh removable battery. It runs Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim update.

The device weighs 146g and feels good in the hands.

Pricing and availability

The Lumia 535 Dual SIM is now available at RM429. It comes with a range of colours including orange, white, cyan and black.

Wait, there’s more

In conjunction with the holiday season, Microsoft Devices is offering some goodies with the new Lumia 535. From now till end of December, the device will come bundled with RM99 worth of free gifts including a 2200mAh powerbank, 16GB memory card, screen protector, keychain and a Christmas notepad.

Initial impressions

While stripped of the Nokia name, the Lumia hasn’t lost its magic. Still a well-packaged, feature-packed device that’s light on the pocket. Lumia’s unmistakable cheerful styling is still evident and while it doesn’t have a PureView camera, the optics are generally good, even in low-light.

A good package overall, especially if you’re in the market for a backup device, or upgrading from a feature phone.
