For what I’d describe as a big name brand, LG is one elusive player, specifically in the Malaysian mobile market. While our next door neighbour Singapore usually gets some love from LG Mobile, we’re lucky to get metal flakes from last year’s devices. But hold your horses, there’s some good news. The flagship LG G6, is actually going to make an appearance officially – in the first week of May.
Funny, just a day ago at the LG Convention 2017, I had asked an LG executive about the LG G6. He was reluctant to reveal much, aside from saying “it’s coming soon in May.” He did remark that it would be available in limited quantities, but hey, some is better than none.
So, the LG G6 is indeed coming, available in three colour choices – Astro Black, Ice Platinum and Mystic White. It will retail for MYR2,999 and will be available starting first week of May at selected LG authorized resellers. Each purchase will come with a free flip case worth MYR174 while stocks last.
The best from LG
The LG G6 was one of the highlights of MWC17, featuring a cutting-edge 5.7-inch QHD+ (2,880 x 1,440 pixel resolution) FullVision Display. For the first time ever in a smartphone, it boasts an 18:9 screen aspect ratio.
The ratio isn’t just for bragging rights (although they have every right to brag about it, being first and all), but enhances user experience.
The unique aspect ratio fits more screen real estate into a slimmer, smaller body. This makes the LG G6 comfortable to hold, and suitable for single-hand use
The gorgeous screen by the way, supports HDR standards – Dolby Vision and HDR10, like the Galaxy S8.
Under the hood, it’s powered by last year’s top mobile processor – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821. It loses out to the Galaxy S8’s SD835 on paper, but who’s looking at the numbers, right? BTW, it packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard UFS 2.0 storage.
If 64GB is limiting, you can expand via microSD (up to 2TB).
In terms of design, it improves upon the LG G5’s metal-wrapped plastic attempt. The aluminium and glass combination with a brushed metal back looks pretty good off the bat. It’s not quite as saliva-inducing as the Galaxy S8, but to each his own.
The great thing is, for the first time, it gets IP68 dust- and water-resistance.
LG has a different implementation of a dual-camera setup compared to the competition. Unlike the Leica-equipped Huawei offerings, the LG G6 features a wide-angle 125-degree f/2.4 lens, and a narrower, standard 71-degree f/1.8 shooter. Both are 13MP sensors (the standard lens has OIS), complemented by an LED flash.
Round the front is a 5MP f/1.9 wide-angle selfie shooter.
Keeping the device running all day is a 3,300mAh battery that supports wireless charging and Quick Charge 3.0 via USB Type-C.
Connectivity-wise, it supports 4G LTE-A 3 band, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2 BLE, and NFC.
Like the awesome LG VG20, it comes with a built-in 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC.
The LG G6 runs Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box, with the latest LG UX 6.0 on top. It’s the first non-Pixel device in the world to feature Google Assistant.
