Huawei launches P30 Pro New Edition with Google Mobile Services

Huawei P30 Pro New Edition

When you’re stripped of the rights to be competitive, what do you do? Well, you do whatever it takes. Huawei’s mobile business, crippled since the Trump administration enforced a trade ban on the company in May 2019, has been forced to be creative to protect business viability and sustainability. Aside from aggressively pushing its proprietary Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and its AppGallery ecosystem over Google Mobile Services (GMS), the company has cleverly packaged pre-ban models and marketed them as new.

Realistically, HMS is never expected to catch up with GMS’ breadth of services and apps, although Huawei would like you to reconsider.

The ongoing trade ban and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have cast a shadow over Huawei’s performance in 2020, with the company’s chairman predicting that “2020 will be difficult.”

Nonetheless, the show must go on. In Germany, Huawei has repackaged its 2019 flagship—the P30 Pro as the P30 Pro New Edition, offered in Silver Frost, Aurora, and Black colourways.

As expected, it’s the same P30 Pro that was launched in March 2019. Because it predates the US trade ban, Huawei is allowed to bake GMS into this device.

Under the hood lies the 7nm Kirin 980 SoC coupled with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

Housed in the sleek metal and glass body is the 6.57-inch curved OLED FHD+ display with a waterdrop notch. It features an under-glass fingerprint scanner and embedded speaker.

In the camera department, the P30 Pro boasts a quad-cam setup consisting of a 40MP f/1.6 wide angle camera, a 20MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle camera, an 8MP f/3.4 5X telephoto camera and a Time of Flight (ToF) camera. Still relevant and competitive, credit where credit is due.

Other specifications include a 4,200mAh battery with 40W SuperCharge support, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

It is unclear if the device runs the latest EMUI10.1 based on Android 10, but will have Google Mobile Services baked in.
