Huawei nova 3e: The baby P20 unleashed in Malaysia

Huawei nova 3e

Last year’s Huawei nova 2i was a runaway hit. Targeted at the young, dynamic and budget-conscious, the nova series fuses premium design, high-end specs with earth-shattering price points. The latest nova 3e, the first model in the 2018 nova portfolio, sings a similar tune.

As detailed in a previous post, the mid-range device can be presumed as a “P20 Lite” with an uncanny resemblance to its flagship sibling. Especially round the back, where a familiar vertical camera array is placed on its glass back. The only dead giveaway is the absence of the word “Leica” next to the camera.

Build quality is good, although not in the same league of the P20 or P20 Pro. The glass body has rounded corners that blend seamlessly to the display on the front. It is offered in two colours: a fashion-forward Klein Blue and a more run-of-the-mill Midnight Black.

It sports a 5.84-inch FullView Display 2.0 FHD+ (2280×1080) display with a 19:9 screen ratio, that’s bright and offers good contrast (1500:1 ratio). The display, by the way, is a similar unit found on the just-launched honor 10.

Underneath it uses the services of the dependable octa-core Kirin 659 chipset, pretty much a standard issue on many mid-range Huawei and honor offerings.

The chip is coupled with 4GB of RAM and a generous 128GB of storage.

Need more storage? Simply slide in a microSD card into the device’s hybrid SIM tray.

In terms of battery life, the 3,000mAh cell should supply a full day’s worth of juice. It charges up via USB Type-C. A 9V/2A power brick is supplied in the box.

In the camera stakes, the nova 3e boasts a massive 24MP selfie shooter while the rear gets a 16MP + 2MP (depth) f/2.2 dual-lens system.

Huawei claims it has light rebalancing technology that integrates light from different sources to optimise image brightness. This also reduces signal-to-noise by 300 percent.

Other nifty features includes a smart photography assistant that gives you gesture control, background replacement and AR effects.

The device runs EMUI 8.0 based on Android Oreo.
