Huawei, China’s leading communications technology solutions provider , today launched the Huawei Ascend P6, the world’s slimmest smartphone in Malaysia. At a mere 6.18mm, the flagship smartphone features top-of-the-line specifications including a 4.7-inch In-Cell HD display, 1.5Ghz quad-core processor and industry-leading 5MP front-facing camera.
Huawei as a consumer mobile company is relatively a new player in the market but has shown through its recent portfolio of products, that it can compete with the best. Towards the end of 2012, Huawei grabbed third spot in global marketshare among smartphone manufacturers for the first time (IDC Research), clinching 5% of the pie. The Huawei Ascend P6 is a testament of its abilities to innovate, execute and grab critical marketshare.
Slim and trim
The Ascend P6 comes in a sleek metallic body, ultra slim at just 6.18mm and weighing just 120g. From first impressions, it looks like a well-built device, and can certainly rival what’s out there currently. Powering the device is a 1.5Ghz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage (upgradable to 32GB via microSD).
Bringing emotion to the mobile
Huawei’s very own flavour of UI called Emotion UI is intuitive and customisable (as it should be), a result of input from over 5 million of its customers. The UI layer sits on top of Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and includes updates to Uni-Home, enhanced security, Huawei’s Me Widget, MagicTouch and SmartReading.
Selfies in HD
The Ascend P6 boasts an industry-leading 5MP front-facing camera and auto facial-enhancing capabilities which should satisfy consumers who love to take ‘selfies’ or self-portraits. The main shooter isn’t shabby either – a 8MP BSI camera with f/2.0 aperture and an outstanding 4cm macro view. The camera also captures video in 1080p Full HD.
Huawei has also added panoramic shoot and facial recognition photographic functions to the Ascend P6.
To ensure long-lasting use, Huawei’s unique Automated Discontinuous Reception (ADRX) and Quick Power Control (QPC) battery optimisation and power saving technology comes built in, improving battery performance by more than 30%. The bundled battery is rated at 2,000mAh.
For superior audio quality, the Ascend P6 features Dolby Digital Plus.
Two is better than one
The Ascend P6 is dual-SIM capable, and Huawei has also included a SIM ejector tool cleverly slotted on the side of the device. (correction: The locally available version is a single-SIM variant, and official word from Huawei is that there are no plans to bring in the dual-SIM)
Pricing and Availability
The Huawei Ascend P6 is priced at an affordable RM1,399 (SRP), and is available in black and white with matching colour cases. Grab a unit from any Huawei authorised dealers nationwide.
What we think
A highly impressive effort by Huawei. While some may argue about its resemblance to a certain iDevice (only much slimmer), Huawei has demonstrated that its prowess in delivering quality and value. Aside from the puny 8GB built-in storage, the Ascend P6 looks seriously like a winner. Plus the fact that it is priced to disrupt even the big boys. What do we think? Buy.
