iPhone X notch driving you nuts? Here’s how to get rid of it

Apple iPhone X notch

I don’t know about you, but I don’t mind the “notch” on the new iPhone X. Similar to the one found on the Essential phone, I think it adds character and uniqueness to the device. However, I do know that many hate it (especially a few of my OCD designer friends). But wait, there is a solution.

As you know, the iPhone X features the most radical design change since the original iPhone. It has an edge-to-edge 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED display which also means the device makes do without a physical home button for the very first time.

The (visibly) odd thing is a bar at the top of the screen that Apple calls a “notch.” The notch is there for a reason. To house Apple’s advanced TrueDepth camera that enables some fancy AR/3D trickery, Portrait selfie mode, Animoji and the new FaceID authentication method.

Call it a design feature, or a compromise, some absolutely hate it. For one, when you’re watching a full screen video, it will be slightly obstructed.

Some apps are optimised for the notch, but most aren’t.

So as mentioned, there is a solution. While it won’t remove the notch per se, an app called Notch Remover adds a black bar on top of the iPhone X wallpaper so it looks like a full black bar with rounded corners.

It works best on the home screen, but won’t work on apps that go full screen, or as mentioned, in a full screen video.

It’s interesting to note that the app doesn’t follow Apple iPhone X design guidelines, however, is approved for consumption on the App Store.

Apple has this to say about the notch:

Don’t mask or call special attention to key display features. Don’t attempt to hide the device’s rounded corners, sensor housing, or indicator for accessing the Home screen by placing black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Don’t use visual adornments like brackets, bezels, shapes, or instructional text to call special attention to these areas, either.

If the notch bothers you, give Notch Remover a try. It’s available for download now for a small fee of MYR3.90.
